IB Learner Profile: A set of attributes and characteristics that the IB DP aims to develop in students,
including being principled, open-minded, and reflective (Figure 1.)
Choosing the right courses is a crucial step in our students IB DP journey at WABE International School. We understand that this can seem like a complex process, but we’re here to simplify it for you. Let’s break down the key components of course selection:
Cores: The Heart of the IB DP
The IB DP consists of three core components that all students complete:
Theory of Knowledge (TOK): TOK is a foundational course that explores the nature of knowledge, critical thinking, and the relationships between different areas of knowledge. It challenges students to question assumptions and develop a deeper understanding of how knowledge is created and shared.
Extended Essay (EE): The EE is an independent research project where students choose a topic of personal interest and write a 4,000-word essay. It’s an opportunity for students to delve into a subject they’re passionate about, developing their research and writing skills.
Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS): CAS is a holistic approach to personal development, requiring students to engage in creative, physical, and service-oriented activities. It encourages them to balance their academic pursuits with other aspects of their lives and make a positive impact on their communities.
Subject Groups: Tailoring Your Academic Path
In addition to the core components, students choose courses from six subject groups:
Group 1 – Studies in Language and Literature: This group includes courses in the student’s native language or a language they are proficient in. Typically, students study literature and develop advanced language skills.
Group 2 – Language Acquisition: Students choose a second language to study, either at the standard or higher level, focusing on language acquisition and cultural understanding.
Group 3 – Individuals and Societies: Courses in this group cover a range of subjects such as history, geography, economics, and psychology. Students explore human behaviour, societies, and the world around them.
Group 4 – Sciences: Students select one or more science courses, such as biology, chemistry, physics, or environmental systems and societies. Hands-on experimentation and inquiry-based learning are emphasized.
Group 5 – Mathematics: Students choose either standard level or higher level mathematics, depending on their interests and career aspirations.
Group 6 – The Arts (or an Additional Course from Groups 1-4): Students can opt for visual arts or they can choose an additional subject from Groups 1-4.
Balancing Your Selection
Students should select six courses, typically one from each subject group. Of these, a minimum of three subjects should be taken at the higher level (HL), while the rest can be at the standard level (SL). This balanced approach ensures a well-rounded education and allows students to explore their passions while meeting programme requirements.
