Tetiana's Journey: Finding a safe space to learn and thrive as an IBDP Student at WABE International School.

After moving out of my home country because of the full-scale invasion, finding a truly safe space that would support my eagerness to learn and explore was the main goal of my family.

However, apart from choosing a school that would help me continue my studies in English, we were also concerned about future opportunities. Therefore the availability of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme at the Wabe International School made it the perfect choice for me.

Attending piano classes for 8 years, becoming a candidate for a master’s of sport in ballroom dancing, and then studying math and physics in one of the best schools in Ukraine for two years has formed my diverse and miscellaneous personality. My family and I absolutely needed to find an educational program that would satisfy all of its aspects.

The IB DP aims to develop well-rounded students who are equipped to contribute positively to the world while also providing a challenging curriculum and a wide range of subjects. Although there were other options for me regarding where to continue my education and be involved in the IB program, Wabe International School was doubtlessly chosen due to its inclusive environment, well-developed mentorship and guidance, and personalized support.

It has always been crucial for me to be supported and understood by teachers throughout my learning journey and WIS became the first school I’ve attended that truly showed me what real teachers’ support means. My curiosity has always led to a lot of questions, but all of them were always answered with patience and calmness. Any personal struggles and issues of mine were always carefully listened to and with a wise piece of advice, I’ve constantly felt heard and understood, which was crucial for me after moving to an entirely new country.

Overall, I was extremely positively surprised by the support provided for each one of the students in the school and in general, smaller, more personalized classes, that ensure that each student receives the individual attention and support they need.

Now that I’ve done the first year of the program, I can confirm from personal experience that the Wabe International School successfully integrates the main aims of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. Knowledge inquiry is represented by various types of learning, which makes learning truly enjoyable, while the promotion of critical thinking is gained by constantly encouraging students to get a deep understanding of a wide range of disciplines.

Essential and mandatory disciplines in the IB DP, such as TOK and CAS opened a whole new world for me when talking about critical thinking and social development through real life experiences. TOK, which refers to the “Theory of Knowledge” helped me make real connections between pieces of knowledge across all the subjects, and CAS, which refers to “Creativity,

Activity, Service” definitely added a whole bunch of new social and sporty activities to my life outside of school and helped me to start my piano and ballroom dancing classes again.

To conclude, the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme at the Wabe International School has opened a whole new world of opportunities for me, while also providing me with essential support from the teachers needed to achieve my future goals. Last, but not least, I met my real friends here, which brightened my high school experience and I’m eternally grateful for everything that the school provided me during the especially hard times.
